Despite sounding like a exciting spring break experience, “Waterboarding at Guantanamo Bay” is not the thrilling water sport adventure you might think it to be. This has come to our attention after the recent spread of an online movement that has been sweeping the nation the past few weeks: The viral USC Speak Your Mind Challenge. The trend has left everyone’s Instagram feed overloaded with videos of people being nominated to pour buckets of water over their heads and in turn nominating others to do the same. Since the challenge was first posted nearly a month ago, millions have taken to their stories in order to promote the advocacy for mental health in our school systems.
But one group is not so happy about this movement. Who you may ask? The prisoners of Guantanamo Bay, who claim that the voluntary dousing of ones body in ice cold water is “a form of cultural appropriation”. How did we acquire this information you ask? How could detainees in one of the most secure facilities on the face of the planet possibly have enough access to social media to view something like this, let alone to have opinions on it and relay the information back to us? Well to you dear reader, I say that there are many things that the Sunnyside Instigator is both capable of and knowledgeable that would seem impossible to the average citizen, things that would boggle your very mind. In short, aye, fuggetabout it.
We the writers choose to make no decisive opinion on the matter one way or the other out of respect for both parties.
